If you have tried weight training and lifting from a professional gym, chances are you have already used Olympic plates. Their types are the ones officially used in Olympic weightlifting. However, they are also found sold in commercial fitness centers and lifting clubs. The main difference between Olympic plate weights and your traditional plates is mainly just the diameter in hole. Olympic plates tend to have a larger hole in the middle while standard ones have smaller holes. Unlike your ordinary plates, Olympic plates are made of with the most superior quality that has to live up to the Olympic standards. It needs to go through close examination to be certified as one. In fact, there are predetermined diameters and sizes to only which they should be derived.

An Olympic plates’ hole diameter and sleeve should be strictly followed. Most weight lifters are assume that most plates are 2” or 1 15/16” in diameter but in fact a number of certified Olympic plates maker like Ivanko, Leoko, Eleiko and other officially acceptable manufacturers build their bars and plates following the lofty standards.

What you don’t know is that some of your usual plates are made with slight flaws. Some of them don’t weigh the same, some not even weighing appropriately as they label it. However, some not so perfect Olympic plates that sell off-the-shelf vary in price and in preciseness. If you are still in doubt if you have purchased an authentic plate, you can simply measure the hole diameter yourself or have an experienced gym owner tell it apart.

If you intend to use the inexpensive versions of it, the ones with larger holes, you have to find a full 2” in diameter sleeves otherwise it will not fit. However, if you are considering purchasing one of the finer Olympic plates, then a 1.951” sleeves will fit exactly right regardless of your succeeding purchases.
